This was a fairly quiet run down to Windy Wellington to catch the ferry to the South Island. This part of the country I had done many times in my trucking days although alot of it then was done during the night.
As die hard born and bred Aucklander it is hard for me to say this but once again the Capital turned on a beautiful day, I have never been there on a crappy day......
We enjoyed the hospitality of Colin White and his daughter at their beautfully restored Lower Hutt home. Colin is a member of the Lotus Club and owns a lovely Elan in fact he owned the car when it was new and recently re-purchased it and had it restored to perfection. Thanx Colin, not many people would invite complete strangers in their home and provide lunch. I guess it's a Kiwi/Car guy thing??
What was to follow was a new experience for this 55 year old Kiwi... his first trip on the Inter Island ferry and his first REAL trip to the South Island, bloody shocking, eh!! To add to my shame my South Africian companion who has been here for 15 years was doing it for the FIFTH time!! My Saffa tour guide's knowledge and experience of the Mainland made my experience so much more enjoyable. SHAME ON U KIWI!!
The trip across the Straight and though the Sounds was an amazing experience with the locals seeming to take great delight in pointing out the spots where the Wahine and a few other ships had sunk. Thanx guys. We arrived safely at Picton and headed at pace to Hanmer Spring for the night.
