Lap 1
While the World was going to hell in a hand cart Lindz and I were hurling ourselves around Gods own in his Opel Speedster with a bunch of like minded petrolheads... mostly grey headed petrolheads!! The Gumball Rally without the fake boobs, the bums and excessively high speeds, well without the first two at least.
We arrived at the Auckland War Museum at about the same time as the rain which was just enough to dampen things a little. There were a great variety of cars representing the Lotus marque but we soon learnt they were not all doing the Tour. After a quick photo shoot and a briefing from organiser Roger Phillips we were on our way to Cambridge for the first of many large lunches that my body could have done without.
From Cambridge Roger had planned an interesting scenic drive to Taupo around the back of Kinloch but a large Civil Defence exercise had closed the proposed route.... the detour was a 10 kilometre plus bumpy metal road not totally suitable for a low slung Lotus. We finally got onto some tarseal and a very dirty bunch of cars arrived to Taupo.
Dinner that night was a trip on a Cat and BBQ... when it came time to pay we thought we had purchased the boat as well as the BBQ meal...............
The next day was track day.. Play Day as they call it.. what a turnout, approx 80 cars of all makes and models from young Asian guys in near new BMWs to an older guy in the family station wagon. These days are so well organised and such great fun I recommend anybody remotely interested in cars to have a go. Its' a hoot!!
